The Map is not the Territory:
An Exploration of Neuro-Linguistic Programming
COURSE OUTLINE

8 week course

Are you ready to explore your consciousness in a new and unique way?

The Map is not the Territory: An Exploration of Neuro-Linguistic Programming will take you on a journey through the structure of your own subjective experience. What is the behavior behind the behavior? How do we organize and act upon our reality?

How the hell can we do this online? NLP is usually taught in face-to-face seminars where participants have the ability to practice exercises with each other. In this course, we’re going to do it a little differently, placing the emphasis on NLP in an online environment, and on skills that you can practice on your own, offline. That means we’re going to DEMONSTRATE the skills, all the way through this, and you will have the opportunity to PRACTICE and develop your own skills.

Each week will feature an audio or video presentation, demonstrating particular techniques and concepts. We’ll discuss that in a weekly live chat session, and in ongoing discussion in our forum message boards. Course text will mostly be online resources that we will link to or upload each week… however, recommended reading for the course includes Richard Bandler’s “Using Your Brain For a Change” and Steve and Connierae Andreas’ “Change Your Mind and Keep the Change.” The books are recommended, but not required.

Week One – The Map and the Territory
How do perception and language interact to create what we believe to be our reality? Beginning with an exploration of the roots of NLP, we will explore how our minds filter our information to create the sensory representations that we act upon.

Week Two – Meta Model and Milton Model
Knowing how our minds use distortion, deletion, and generalization to filter our perceptions, how can we USE language to uncover missing deep structure… and how can we use language to direct consciousness in useful ways?

Week Three – Rapport, Pacing and Leading
Using some of the basics of NLP, we can explore how to get rapport with others, and how to, consciously or unconsciously, lead others into different behaviors. This is the essence of personal influence!

Week Four – Anchoring
Anchoring is the basic unit of the post-hypnotic response. A stimulus is attached to a response through association. We will discuss how anchors form naturally, how they are a part of ALL learning, and how we can use anchors to access specific states of consciousness at will.

Week Five – Submodalities
Learning how we array our consciousness around us in images, sounds, and feelings allows us to play with the structure of our experience in fun and useful ways. Learn some quick ways to change moods, attitudes, and habits. Subjective experience becomes modeling clay for your creative endeavors.

Week Six – Language Patterns
Almost everything you ever wanted to know about linguistic patterns for getting results, including embedded commands, ambiguity, and presuppositions. Or at least as much of this as we can jam into a week’s lesson!

Week Seven – NLP in Cyberspace
By this point you will have experienced a little bit of how NLP can be used in text-based and audio-visual environments. We’ll add to that with discussion of exactly what we’ve been doing in that regard and how you can increase your effectiveness in chat rooms, message boards, and mailing lists.

Week Eight – NLP in Magick and Consciousness Exploration
So let’s say you are interested in more than seeing therapy clients or padding your bank account (and we hope you are!)… How can NLP be used to explore and expand upon a spiritual path, in magick, meditation, and altered states?
