The Crazy Wisdom of Philip K. Dick
Outline

8 Week Course
Sept 17 to Nov 11

Erik Davis is the author of Techgnosis and The Visionary State: A Journey through California’s Spiritual Landscape. Erik consulted on the script for A Scanner Darkly, and was recognized by the New Yorker for his expertise in PKD’s work. He has taught courses at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is working on a book about PKD.

Once a purely cult figure, Philip K. Dick ( 1928-1982) is now widely recognized as a pulp visionary of the highest order. This course will approach his work not as science fiction but as crazy wisdom. We’ll explore how his texts seem designed to illuminate our posthuman problems and our most ancient philosophical questions — and to then scramble those insights with a cheap ray gun. We will read two of Dick’s major novels, both chosen for their heavy gnostic themes. We will discuss drugs and archons and machines that break down, including, possibly, yourself. We will also explore the two greatest examples of the many PKD movies to date—further evidence that Dick’s spirit will only continue to permeate the culture at large.

WEEK ONE: Intro
Introduction to PKD’s life, work, and major themes. Participants will also have the opportunity to communicate their backgrounds and interests.

WEEK TWO - THREE: The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch
A close look at this dark 1964 masterpiece. We’ll look at themes of pop media, virtual reality, telepathy, drugs, gnostic archons, and consumer culture.

WEEK FOUR: Blade Runner: The Final Cut
Ridley Scott’s final version is set for release on DVD this summer. We’ll break it down, and consider how it does and does not reflect PKD’s visions of the android.

WEEK FIVE - SIX: VALIS
Because it combines fiction and autobiography, this book will give us a window onto PKD’s famous 1974 visionary experience as well as his ideas about it.  We’ll also explore how this masterpiece itself teaches us how (and how not) to read PKD’s own writings.

WEEK SEVEN: A Scanner Darkly (film)
No doubt the most faithful PKD film to date, Richard Linklater’s animated film simultaneously explores drug culture and our surveillance state. Will the future itself make us schizo?

WEEK EIGHT: The Future
Will PKD’s star continue to rise? Why has he become so popular in Hollywood? What lies ahead for fans? More importantly, how do the works we have read prepare us for the future? What is his message – and how does he scramble it?

Note: In order to dig deep, we will only have two required novels to read for this eight-week course, plus two films to see. However, I have added suggested books for those who would like to read works that will help inform the main discussion or are already familiar with the main works.
